The Local Studies Centre holds a unique collection of 10,000 photographs, paintings and drawings dating from the 19th Century that covers all areas of the borough. Take a tour of the image database and look at some of the most memorable views recorded of our changing landscape. Within this small selection taken from the collection, there will be images that will appeal to you whatever your interest or association with the locality. We intend to continue loading images over time, so please revisit this site.
Additional to material gathered by the service, we are fortunate to have received donations from local people concerned with documenting the rapid change the borough has experienced since 1900 and have collected and photographed views that have contributed to the development of the collection. Donations or copies of original images would be gratefully accepted to enhance the collection and provide new material for public research.
Whether you are new to the borough, hold fond memories of the area or are merely browsing, we hope it inspires you to further explore the diverse cultural heritage of the borough. Contact us if you would like help with your search.
